Swimming pools come in many different types, shapes and sizes. However, they all fall into one of three categories – ‘above ground’, ‘semi-in ground’ or ‘in ground’, and then are further categorised by the type of material they are constructed from. They are also classified into overflow or skimmer type pools or systems according to their filter functions.
In this post, we dive into what these three different categories are (and the different types of swimming pools), the type of materials used in their construction and what are the differences between overflow and skimmer pool systems.
Categories of Swimming Pool Construction
In Ground Pool
As terms go, this one is self-explanatory – an in-ground pool is a pool built into the ground. There are several types of materials used in the construction of in-ground pools – concrete, fibreglass, (often referred to as [prefabricated] one-piece pool construction), Gunite (or shotcrete), ceramic, vinyl, stainless steel, and composite panels.
There are many different in-ground pool designs and shapes you can choose from, depending on your desired building materials. Some of the most common include Infinity pools, Lap pools, Exercise pools, Plunge pools, Natural pools, Moving Floor pools and Salt-Water Pools.
Semi-In Ground Pool
A semi in-ground pool is one that is partially installed in the ground and partially installed above ground. Featuring similar construction and materials to in ground pools, its hybrid structure makes it more adaptable to the terrain, on a sloping plot, for example, where it would not be possible to install an in-ground pool.
Above Ground Pool
An above-ground pool is a structure that is built above the ground surface. Whether prefabricated or built-in a wide range of available materials can be used in the construction of above-ground pools, including stone, concrete, wood, stainless steel, acrylic glass, fibreglass, synthetic fibre and polyester.

Swimming Pool Systems
Overflow Pool
An Overflow Pool (or deck level pool) is where the water’s edge is the same level as the surrounding deck. The surface water flows into a grate or overflow channel around the perimeter and then falls under gravity into a balance tank where it is filtered and treated before being pumped back into the pool through water return inlets. This process maintains a constant pool water level and allows water to circulate continuously.
Skimmer Pool
A Skimmer Pool has an edge that sits approximately 6” (150mm) higher than the pool water level. Skimmers fitted into the pool walls continually remove and process the top layer of water to keep the surface clean, eliminating the need for a balance tank.

Choosing the Right Type of Swimming Pool
Each pool type has its own advantages and benefits, with different characteristics, properties and maintenance requirements. Which type of pool is best depends on factors such as budget and preferences and lifestyle, but our expert team of pool builders can advise you on the best choices to achieve the best results and deliver a result that represents the best in both engineering and craftsmanship.
Above ground pools are usually a semi-permanent stand-alone structure constructed on the surface of the ground, rather than being excavated into it. This makes it cheaper upfront and a popular choice for homeowners, but they do have a shorter overall lifespan. Additionally, they can be harder to fit into the aesthetic of your space with much of the equipment to run them out in the open, although some have decks built around them.
Semi-in ground swimming pools offer a good compromise between an in-ground pool and an above ground pool. Its hybrid structure requires less excavation and allows it to be installed where in ground pools aren’t feasible on a sloping plot, for example. While they can be paired with decking and landscaping there are limitations to pool designs and depths and they may not be as durable as fully in ground options, and their installation can actually be more complex and time-consuming than an in-ground pool.
In ground swimming pools are generally considered the most popular type of pool and perhaps the most common in hotels, leisure centres etc. While they require more construction, they are generally the most flexible with a variety of customisation options and different materials available. This flexibility extends to size, shape, depth, and features allowing for tailored designs to match specific commercial needs and preferences. Built into the ground, their solid foundation makes them more durable and resistant to the elements. This durability translates to a longer lifespan and potentially lower long-term maintenance costs and a well-maintained in ground pool can last a lifetime.
