Types of Swimming Pools
Swimming pools are generally defined as ‘above ground’, ‘semi-in ground’ or ‘in ground’, and then by the type of material that they are constructed from.
Swimming pools are also classified into overflow or skimmer type pools according to their filter functions.
An Overflow Pool (or deck level pool) is where the water’s edge is the same level as the surrounding deck. The surface water flows into a grate or overflow channel around the perimeter and then falls under gravity into a balance tank where it is filtered and treated before being pumped back into the pool through water return inlets. This process maintains a constant pool water level and allows water to circulate continuously.
A Skimmer Pool has an edge that sits approximately 6″ (150mm) higher than the pool water level. Skimmers fitted into the pool walls continually remove and process the top layer of water to keep the surface clean, eliminating the need for a balance tank.
Types of Pool Construction
IN GROUND POOL
An in-ground pool is built into the ground. There are several types of materials used in the construction of in-ground pools. These include concrete, fibreglass, (often referred to as one-piece pool construction), Gunite (or shotcrete), ceramic, vinyl, stainless steel, and composite panels. There are many different in ground pool designs and shapes you can choose from, depending on your desired building materials. Some of the most common are Infinity pools, Lap pools, Exercise pools, Plunge pools, Natural pools, Moving Floor pools and Salt-Water pools.
SEMI-IN GROUND POOL
A semi in-ground pool is one that is partially installed in the ground and partially installed above ground. Featuring similar construction and materials to in ground pools, its hybrid structure makes it more adaptable to the terrain, on a sloping plot, for example, where it would not be possible to install an in-ground pool.
ABOVE GROUND POOL
Whether prefabricated or built-in a wide range of available materials can be used in the construction of above-ground pools, including stone, concrete, wood, stainless steel, acrylic glass, fibreglass, synthetic fibre and polyester. Each style and material has its own pros and cons, with different characteristics, properties and maintenance requirements. We can advise you on the best choices to achieve the best results and deliver a result that represents the best in both engineering and craftsmanship.

Hydrotherapy Pools
Hydrotherapy pools are ideal for rehabilitation and general fitness. Both soothing and invigorating they are found in aquatic physiotherapy treatment centres, leisure centres, hotels, spas and wellness retreats across the UK with those looking to take advantage of the therapeutic and health benefits offered through the combination of warm water, massaging jets and other water features.
With over 35 years’ experience in constructing bespoke hydrotherapy pools, we have a thorough appreciation and understanding of the considerations and complexities involved in their design and installation.
Plunge Pools
Plunge pools are typically much smaller, shallower, and more compact than regular swimming pools. Designed for relaxation, exercise and for cooling off after heat treatments such as sauna or steam sessions, cold plunge pools often form part of health clubs, leisure centres, spas and wellness retreats.
However, they can be versatile in their design and adaptable to various uses and settings, making for a great addition to any indoor or outdoor space where space is limited, or you want a more compact and low-maintenance pool option.
