cold plunge pools
What is a Cold Plunge Pool?
A cold plunge pool or frigidarium is a type of pool specially designed for cold water therapy or cold-water immersion. It provides a controlled environment for individuals to immerse themselves in water maintained at a reduced temperature typically between 7°C to 13°C (45°F-55°F). Usually entered after and between hot thermal treatments to cool bathers down, the cold water stimulates various physiological responses in the body, leading to numerous health benefits and leaving users feel refreshed and re-energised.
What are the benefits of cold water plunge pools?
Cold water immersion has been associated with several health benefits making them especially popular in sports centres as a recovery solution after workouts. Some of these health benefits include improved lymphatic and cardiovascular circulation, reduced inflammation, boosted immune system, an increase in energy and improved mental wellbeing.
Hot Plunge Pools
What is a Hot Plunge Pool?
Whereas a cold plunge pool is primarily used to facilitate recovery of muscle inflammation, a hot-plunge pool is often used as a pre-workout warm-up or for the treatment of chronic pain conditions. The water temperature is typically maintained safely between 33°C and 38°C (92°F-100°F) increasing the ability to be able to withstand prolonged physical and mental effort for the workout.
What are the benefits of hot water plunge pools?
Hot water immersion can improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, loosen muscles and increase flexibility and can help reduce symptoms of arthritis, lower back pain, and many more debilitating ailments.
Plunge Pool Design & Installation Recommendations
There are no specific rules on what dimensions a plunge pool need to be, but as they are not designed for swimming in, they don’t need to be large. The key component is to ensure the water is cold or warm enough to provide the desired therapeutic effects and deep enough (around 1 metre to 1.5 metres in depth) for users to fully immerse themselves.
A cold plunge pool typically uses standard cold water that is filtered and treated the same way as any swimming pool. Plunge pool chillers work to keep the water temperature cool taking water through the system and removing the heat before it is returned to the pool.
A hot plunge pool utilises a heat pump (or air source heat pump) to extract heat energy from the air and transfer it to the pool water – an efficient and environmentally friendly system for heating your pool.
Plunge pools can fit in small spaces and be maintained relatively easily. They can be built in various shapes and sizes, but their design will depend on the space and surroundings. Ideally, they should be in close vicinity to hot or cold treatment rooms so they can be integrated into the thermal spa experience. It’s also recommended that a shower be installed close by for users to rinse off before entering. Bespoke plunge pools from Topline can be constructed using cast-concrete, stainless-steel or a ceramic composite shell. Wood-edged plunge pools can also be installed as a contrast.
