What is a Salt Room?

A salt room can be defined as a controlled environment that aims to mimic the microclimate of natural salt cave making use of salt’s natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and astringent properties.

Salt rooms come in two forms: active and passive. Active salt rooms provide a controlled way of dispersing salt into the air within the enclosed space using a halogenerator (or salt generator) which crushes and grinds the salt into tasteless microscopic particles to be inhaled and exposed to the skin.

Passive salt rooms are climate-controlled rooms created to imitate the conditions found in natural salt caves and salt mines. They are designed to contain large volumes of various types of salt décor such as Dead Sea salt, Himalayan salt, Rock salt or other salts lining the walls, ceilings and floors. However, while they may look like a natural salt cave environment, passive salt rooms do not use a halogenerator and are used primarily for relaxation and meditation.

What is Salt Therapy?

Salt Therapy involves breathing in air with microscopic salt particles. It is a natural non-invasive therapy used to treat respiratory and skin conditions. The cleansing salt air is said to have de-congesting, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Its origins can be traced back to Eastern European and Central Asian cultures but began to gain scientific attention in the mid-19th century when Polish physician, Dr Felix Boczkowski, discovered that men working in nearby salt mines suffered fewer respiratory problems than the general population. This observation sparked interest in the potential therapeutic effects of salt.

Salt therapy can be dry or wet. The difference is based on the way salt is used. Dry therapy involves small salt particles dispersed in a dry moisture-free and humidity-free atmosphere often referred to as salt rooms or salt caves, while wet salt therapy requires a saline solution that is either soaked in or applied as an aerosol spray.

Dry salt therapy is also classified as halotherapy or speleotherapy. According to the Salt Therapy Association, speleotherapy is a therapy that utilises the climate conditions and salt air specific to natural occurring caves, underground salt caves and salt mines. Halotherapy, on the other hand, uses an artificial environment and modern technology to reproduce the therapeutic conditions found in natural salt caves in a modern, spa-like room.

What are the benefits of a Salt Room?

Salt therapy has been shown to benefit many chronic respiratory and skin conditions as users breathe in the saline air.

Among other things, salt therapy alleviates a range of respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, sinusitis and seasonal allergies, cleansing the lungs of bacteria, irritants, and pollution and reducing inflammation of the respiratory tract. It also improves circulation and enhances lung capacity and oxygen intake, making it a favourite with sports enthusiasts and athletes looking to complement sports performance and stamina. Additionally, it helps soothe skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis removing impurities from the skin.

Salt Saunas

A salt sauna is a sauna environment that includes Himalayan salt bricks placed on one or more walls of the sauna to create a salt wall, or added to the room as a stand-alone unit if space is limited. The salt sauna therapy comes from a halogenerator pumping atomised salt particles into the air.

Our bespoke salt saunas include heated loungers on which to relax and breathe in the salt air. The interior of the room can be enhanced with colour therapy and under-bench LED lighting creating a relaxing atmospheric glow and adding to the ambience.

Dry Salt Rooms

In our dry salt room builds, we create an environment where all the surfaces are salt encrusted (resembling the salt cave environment), leaving Corian heated loungers for the user to relax on.

The room is kept at a constant temperature and humidity while dry salt is atomised into the air as a tasteless salty mist.

They can be fitted with LED lighting and music speakers to add even more comfort.

Wet Salt Rooms

Wet Salt Rooms (sometimes referred to as Japanese salt steam rooms) are similar to our steam rooms in that they are fully tiled.

A halogenerator disperses the salt particles into the steam with the addition of eucalyptus or mint to complete the therapy experience.

Himalayan salt blocks can also be added behind glass or Perspex to create a salt wall.

Salt Room Design & Installation Recommendations

As halotherapy is versatile in its application, salt rooms can be designed and built in a variety of ways and differing sizes and shapes.

They can be built from an empty shell or by transforming an existing room, but there are several factors to consider during the designing and building process.

Salt can corrode surrounding fixtures, equipment and ventilation systems, so it’s important that the room be within a specific temperature and humidity range, and that air flow, ventilation and air circulation is controlled.

Proper ventilation is crucial to ensure proper airflow of the salt aerosol as well as to maintain air quality and prevent excessive humidity.
